From humble beginnings in 1947 Clare Drama Festival is one of the oldest and longest running festivals in the country, and has developed into one of the foremost showpieces of the amateur drama movement in Ireland. Each March the festival features 10 full length plays performed by groups from all over the country. At the end of each production, the adjudicator gives his public comments to the audience and talks to the cast in private afterwards.
Clare Drama Festival is one of 36 preliminary festivals from all over Ireland affiliated to the Amateur Drama Council of Ireland. About sixty amateur drama groups compete to reach the All-Ireland Drama Finals in Castleblayney and Athlone.
