On Sunday week Aug 28th from between 2 and 5pm we are having a 4k heritage walk on the 12 O’clock hills in conjunction with National Heritage Week. We are well motivated to organise this after being successful in securing a heritage grant to restore Upper Crag Bridge. This is a very popular bridge for taking photographs as you exit the Crag river walk section or our 4k and 8.5k looped walks. The upgrade of this bridge gets underway in early September
For this heritage walk we are also taking the opportunity to open a new footbridge which is sponsored by John Mullane after we made a facebook appeal for a sponsor. Leading up to this footbridge we have also installed 71 meters of railway sleeper type walkway which has been funded by church gate collections plus funding from from Kilmurry Tidy Towns which we appreciate very much.
The meeting point for the Heritage Walk is Kilkishen Cultural Centre at 2pm on Sun Aug 28th where an overview of the church restoration will be given plus a tour of the facility. We then make our way to the Belvoir Trailhead car-park to start our walk at 2.45pm. It will be a walk and talk tour taking in a number of heritage sites and stopping off at the area know as the Stepping Stones for the opening of the Footbridge by John Mullane plus the new 71 meters of walkway. After that we will have approx. 15mins walk via Mary Anne’s to Sorcha and Brian’s yard where light refreshments will be served. Back to the car-park is about a 10min walk from here. Bring a change of footwear for the heritage walk.
The heritage walk will be conducted by Michael McNamara Sixmilebridge who has a great history of the area pre forestation and back to famine times in the 1840s.
