Fishing in East Clare

Fishing in East Clare is an Angler’s dream. Situated on the western shore of Lough Derg it has over 40 lakes and rivers, all surrounded by tranquil and beautiful scenery. Coarse fishing is the most popular form of angling with good catches of Bream, Roach, Rudd, Teneh, Pike, Perch and Hybrids. Wild Brown Trout can be found in Lough Derg and some mountain lakes. Wherever you choose to stay in East Clare you are never far from a good fishing venue. Most of the lakes are well signposted and indicate the species of fish found there.

The towns and villages of Killaloe, Ogonnelloe, Scariff, Tuamgraney, Mountshannon and Whitegate are all on the shores of Lough Derg.

Lough Derg is the largest lake on the Shannon River. Covering an area of some 13,000 hectares, the lake stretches 35 km in length from Killaloe at the southern end to Portumna at the Northem tip. Its widest point is 12km from Scariff on the western shore to Youghal Bay on the eastern side. Lough Derg is usually fished by boat. Boats can be hired in any of the towns and villages in the area.

Lough Graney, the biggest of the Clare Lakes can be accessed at Flagmount and Caher. The River Graney flows from Lough Graney through Lough O’Grady and exits as The Scariff River.

The Scariff River has been described as one of the most beautiful inland waterways in Ireland. Navigable for about 5 km, it meanders slowly from Scariff Harbour through Tuamgraney and on to join Lough Derg. Access for Coarse angling can be found in Scariff and Tuamgraney.

Bodyke is home to Bridget Lake (Silvergrove Lake) and O’Callaghan’s Mills has Kilgory Lake. A few miles further on is Doon Lake beside the village of Broadford. Cullaun Lake and its neighbouring smaller lakes are adjacent to Kilkishen.

Between Tulla and Feakle, there are quite a few lakes the most well-known are Clondanagh Lake, Clondomey Lake, Rosslara Lake and Dromore Lake.

In the interest of conservation, anglers are requested to return all fish live to the waters.
